Breville BOV800XL Toaster Oven Review
Breville makes three Smart Toaster Oven models. I looked carefully at all three while deciding which one would work best for my family.
This page contains a detailed review of each of the three Breville toaster oven models.
The BOV800XL is the largest and is the only one that is a convection oven. In the smaller ovens, you can’t cook as much as in the BOV800XL; for example, 4 slices of toast instead of 6. But all three models still have the “smart” features and the styling, operation and features of all three models are pretty similar.

BOV800XL Smart Toaster Oven Review
The BOV800XL is the largest of the three Smart Ovens. It’s the only one of the three that is a convection oven, and it’s interior is large enough to bake bread or to cook a good sized chicken.
The stainless steel finish is both beautiful and functional . . . and it’s a breeze to keep it spotless. The oven has a the feel of a well-built machine and it will look good in any kitchen With the crumb tray right in front, you never have to move it around.
The BOV800XL outside dimensions are:
• Width is 18 1/2 inches • Depth is 16 1/4 inches • Height is 11 1/4 inches.
Intuitive Operator Controls
The operator dials and buttons are very simple on the BOV800XL and you really can operate the oven without ever reading the manual.
As you can see, the oven’s nine pre-set functions include most of the things you do with any oven:
- Bake
- Broil
- Roast
- Bake cookies
- Bake pizza
- Toast bagels
- Toast bread
- Reheat something or
- Keep something warm.
You can even tell the oven that you’re starting with a frozen item (the little button that looks like a snowflake) and it will adjust it’s actions accordingly.
It’s also very easy to customize any of these functions to get results that you want. And once you customize a function, the BOV800XL remembers it. Next time you use that function, it’s already set to your last setting.
As an example, let’s take a look at setting the toast function to toast your bread just the way you like it.
The oven starts with a medium setting of 4. If you like your toast browner than that, you just turn the Temperature dial to 5, 6 or 7; lighter to 3, 2 or 1.
Next time you select the Toast function, it’s already set to the last setting you used.

About What Adele Said
All the functions of the BOV800XL are displayed on it’s digital display. It’s back-lighted, big and sharp enough that it’s always easy to read. It’s easy to tell at a glance whether the oven is on or off. The display is normally a blue color but it changes to orange during pre-heating and cooking times.
The Function Dial has 9 pre-set cooking functions:
• Bake • Broil • Roast • Cookies • Reheat • Pizza • Bagel • Toast • Warm
It’s hard to make a mistake with these. The same is true of the Temperature Dial and the Time Dial. They do just what you’d expect them to.
Every operation is started with the large pushbutton marked with a red circle and labelled Start/Cancel.
The three smaller pushbuttons allow you to:
• Turn the convection fans On or Off
• Set the temperature to be displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius
• Tell the oven that your starting with a frozen item
The Smart Oven’s Wire Rack
The results you get with this smart oven depend on, and can be affected by, the position of the wire rack. So it’s important that you position the rack according to the guide printed on the glass door.
You can see that the correct position depends on what you’re cooking:
- Top = Broil
- Middle = Toast, Cookie, Bagel & Pizza
- Bottom = Bake, Roast, Reheat & Warm
Breville’s Element IQ . . . What’s an Element IQ?
Element IQ is Breville’s name for one of the best smart features this oven has. It automatically adjusts the power of the heating elements depending on what is being cooked. I think it’s what makes the smart oven cook and bake everything so well.

My Favorite BOV800XL Features
I really like that the Breville Smart Oven is almost idiot-proof. As long as you know what you’re cooking, it’s hard to get a bad result. You don’t even have to know what temperature you need, the BOV800XL sets the correct temp for you as long as you tell it what you’re cooking.
This Breville Smart Toaster Oven does so many other little things for you:
- adjusts how it cooks when you start out with something that’s frozen
- remembers the settings for how you like your food cooked
- automatically pulls the oven rack out when you open the door
- cleans easily with the crumb tray right in front.
I don’t know of another oven that does all those things.

The BOV650XL Compact Smart Oven® still has the same power, similar smart features and the Element IQ heating technology as it’s bigger brother.
So if you don’t have room for the BOV800XL, this model may fit in your kitchen.
The Compact Smart Oven Dimensions
How much smaller is the BOV650XL than the BOV800XL? It’s 2 inches narrower; it’s depth is 3/4 of an inch less and it’s height is 1 inch less.
- Width is 16 1/2 inches • Depth is 15 1/2 inches • Height is 10 1/4 inches
The Compact Smart Oven Controls
The layout of the controls is a little different than those of the BOV800XL. But as you can see, the eight pre-set functions still include most of the things you do with any oven:
- Toast
- Bagels
- Bake
- Broil
- Roast
- Cookies
- Pizza
- Reheat
(There is no Warm function.)
The BOV650XL is still smart, once you customize a function, the BOV650XL remembers it. Next time you use that function, it’s already set to your last setting.

Remember, the BOV650XL is not a convection oven and it’s a little smaller than the BOV800XL. It will only toast 4 slices of bread at a time, not 6. You also lose an inch from the size of the pizza that will fit, 12 inches instead of 13.
